Detailed informationen about MediaWiki

MediaWiki is a free software for structuring and archiving information (knowledge base). The origin of MediaWiki is Wikipedia. MediaWiki is an open source software and is available under the GPL licence.

Public or private

With MediaWiki you can build sites like Wikipedia which are open for anyone, as for reading as for editing. It is possible though to restrict the access to registered users and disallow public registration) so only company employees for example can access the wiki.

Templates for text snippets

General information like hints are reused quite often and therefore can be used as snippets, so you can manage them at one single spot.

Customise your wiki with extensions

MediaWiki can be extended in its functionality using extensions, that can be a PDF converter to export wiki pages to PDF files on demand (visitor clicking on a download as PDF link) or the integration of a OpenStreetMap widget just to cite a few examples. The extensions managed by the MediaWiki community can be browsed on the website.

A powerful search engine with auto completion helps efficient to find the needed information within large database. In order to improve performance and search functionality (for example multifaceted search), it is possible to integrate other powerful search engines. This is possible with the XL packages or higher. Please contact us for more information.

Interlanguage links are the small navigation links that show up in the sidebar in most MediaWiki skins which connect an article with related articles in other languages within the same Wiki family. This can provide language-specific communities connected by a larger context, with all wikis on the same server or each on its own server.

Stop spam and vandalism

There quite some extensions to block massive spam and vandalism. Here some examples: TitleBlacklist, ConfirmEdit, QuestyCaptcha, TorBlock, SimpleAntiSpam, SpamBlacklist… Depending on the Wiki you are aiming to create and manage, it is preferable to allow only trusted users to edit content.

Versioning of articles and media files

MediaWiki is meat to be used by multiple (many) users (at the same time) that is why it does archive all changes made to an article in order to be able to track any change in the future. The change information contains the username, the date and the IP. On the detailed view, content changes are highlighted and it is possible to restore versions if needed.

User management

The MediaWiki user management is fine grained in order to clearly determine roles and permissions within large teams.
